Johnston Canyon

Johnston Canyon

Johnston Canyon is a classic circuit route located about 25km northwest of Banff. Its year-round accessibility has made it an extremely popular destination for more than the beginner hiker; families, travellers and climbers are equally, if not more, seen on the trail.

The parking lots for Johnston Canyon are found on the right hand side of the Bow Valley Parkway; approx 24 km north of Banff. (About 30mins)

The lower falls are located just over 1 km from the trailhead; the upper falls another 1.5km. It is also possible to continue further onto the Ink Pots (3 more km after the upper falls.

As I previously mentioned, this trail’s low elevation gain and convenient accessibility makes it more than suitable for all ages and fitness levels (it’s pet friendly too!) It can easily be completed within an hour or two, but depending how far you go, it’s easy to spend the entire day here too!

When is better to go: Summer? Or Winter?

Summer

+ Easily accessible

+ Flowing waterfall views at best (Fullest in spring!)

– Over-crowded

Winter

+ Minimal crowds (if any!)

+ Beautiful winter scenery

– Access more difficult due to ice. Microspikes or crampons or may be required.

Unfortunately warmer months bring the larger crowds; jam packing it full. So, to get the best experience out of Johnston Canyon, I highly recommend going in the winter! (Besides taking advantage of the peace and quiet, I actually find it even more beautiful at this time of year!)

That being said, if you aren’t a fan of winter, paying a visit to the Canyon is absolutely worth it at anytime of the year! Just make sure to arrive early to avoid the crowds! (I’d say no later than 10:30am in winter, 9:30am in summer)

Also, keep in mind that the convenience and coffee shops are only seasonal so, especially in the winter, make sure to pack a snack!
